Vickers, Darrell Lee
April 04, 1954 - August 16, 2010
On Monday, August 16th, 2010, after a long battle with multiple sclerosis, our most loved Darrell Vickers of Gray Road, Crab Orchard was set free. He was 56 years of age.
The second of five children, Darrell Lee Vickers was born on April 4, 1954 at Bluefield, Virginia. The son of late Douglas Ray Vickers Sr., and Virginia Martha Brooks Vickers, his mother died when he was very young and his father would marry the late Betty Vickers who would become his mother. His brother, Ronnie has also preceded him in death.
Darrell spent his childhood at Mabscott. He resided in Lincolnton, North Carolina for ten years, recently returning to the Beckley area. While in Beckley he worked as an auto machinist for Beckley Wrecking. At the age of 28, Darrell was stricken by a very aggressive form of multiple sclerosis. Although his life has been faced with great challenges he enjoyed living. The “small, everyday things” were important. He loved to ride his riding lawn mower and work with his grandchildren on their cars.
Left to cherish his memory is his beloved family that will miss him very much. His loving wife and caregiver for the past 38 years, Norma Light Vickers; he was “Daddy” to Jenny Rife and her husband, Larry of Seagrove, NC, Sharon Snead and her husband Steve of Lincolnton, Darrell Lee Vickers Jr., and his wife Christy of Crab Orchard; he was the doting “Paw Paw of Christopher, Lori, Michael, Candace, Sarah, Alyssa, and Ronnie; the proud great grandfather of Hayden, Autumn and Tristan; the fond brother of Douglas “Pete” Vickers Jr. of Beckley, Jeff Vickers of Mabscott, Duyane Vickers of Tazewell, Danny Thompson of Beckley, Teresa Johnson of Woodstock, VA and Regina Meadows of Beckley.
Funeral services will be Friday, August 20th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Lilly officiating. Darrell will then be laid to rest at the Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday evening and one hour prior to the services on Friday.
And now at the end of the day, we his family know that “God wanted Darrell now, HE set him free…” |
