Dillon, George Washington

March 26, 1920 - January 12, 2012

On Thursday, January 12th, 2012, George W. Dillon of the Lower Sandlick Community left us to join his loving wife of 53 years, Ruby Dillon at the Veterans Area Medical Center. He was in his 91st year. One of five children, George Washington Dillon was born on March 26th, 1920, in Raleigh County. His parents were the late Grandville and Charlottie Dillon. His sisters, Goldie Davis, Iva Clyburn and Stella Howie and a brother, Woodrow Dillon have preceded George in death. George was a Sergeant in the US Army. A World War II Veteran, he was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. A retired coal miner, George worked at Armco Steel at Montcoal. He had 35 years in the mining industry. George attended the Bradley Freewill Baptist Church. In addition to his beloved wife, Ruby, George was preceded in death by a son, Danny Dillon and a son-in-law, Neal Newman. Those left to cherish his memory are his surviving children, Glenda Jennings and her husband, Danny of Beckley, Randall Dillon and his wife, Judy of Sandlick and daughter-in-law, Etta Jean Dillon of Fairdale; seven grandchildren, Randall Dillon Jr., Robert Newman II, Dason Dillon, Jennifer Hargis, Stacie Smith, Martha Scott and Danetta Barnett as well as eleven great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews, among them, a special niece, Garnett Barone and many friends. On Monday, January 16th, at 11:00 am we will remember the life of this good man with a “Service of Remembrance” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Pastors, Wayne Peters, Randy Mann, and David Cook will be officiating. George will then be taken to the Sunset Memorial Park where he will be laid to rest beside his beloved Ruby. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 6 to 8pm at the mortuary and one hour prior the services on Monday. George’s grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Oak Hill Post, 3110 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct military rites at the Sunset Memorial Park.
