Smith, Gov. Hulett Carlson
October 12, 1918 - January 15, 2012
It is with great sadness that we the family of Gov. Hulett Carlson Smith, announce his passing. Our beloved father, granddaddy, public servant and friend too many people entered eternal life on Sunday, January 15th, 2012. The Governor was in his 93rd year.
The second of two sons, Hulett Carlson Smith was born on October 21, 1918, in Beckley. He was the son of the late Joseph Luther and Christine Carlson Smith Sr. His brother, Joseph Luther Smith Jr. has preceded him in death. The Smith family has worshiped at the Beckley Presbyterian Church for generations.
Gov. Smith spent his childhood at his family home on Woodlawn Avenue. A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania, he faithfully served his country during World War II in the US Navy.
In 1942, our father married our mother, Mary Alice Tieche. To this union was born seven children, Carolyn, Alice Christine, Suzaine and Paul who survives. Hulett Carlson Smith Jr., Mark Weston Smith and an infant son have proceeded in death. Our family made their home at Crestwood where we have many wonderful memories. Our mother, Mary Alice died in 1987. Granddaddy had twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A son-in-law, George Sheets and daughter-in-law, Patti and his sisters-in-law, Nancy Smith and Phoebe Tieche Herring survive as well a niece and several nephews.
Hulett Carlson Smith was elected the 27th governor of the State of West Virginia in 1964.
We his family invite you to join us at the Hulett C. Smith Theatre , Tamarack Conference Center on Thursday evening, January 26th, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm and on Friday, January 27th from 11:00 am to the hour of 1:00pm. At 2:00 pm on Friday afternoon the public is invited to a “Service of Thanksgiving for A Life Well Lived” at the Beckley Presbyterian Church, 203 South Kanawha Street. The Rev. John McKinnon will be officiating. The Governor will then be laid to rest in the Smith-Tieche Family Mausoleum at the Sunset Memorial Park
