Lorenz, Walter Ludwig

June 11, 1930 - January 20, 2012

On Friday, January 20th, 2012, our beloved, Wally Lorenz of Pine Hills passed away at the Raleigh General Hospital following a short illness. He was in his 81st year. An only child, Walter Ludwig Lorenz was born on June 11th, 1930 in Brooklyn, New York. His parents were the late Walter Ludwig Sr. and Stephanie Gotaud. “Wally” as he was known affectionately all his life, received his formal education in Brooklyn schools and was a veteran of the US Navy. He apprenticed at the HOE & Company training as a machinist on printing presses. In the 1950’s, Wally would come to Beckley to work on the presses for the Beckley Newspaper. He took his meals at the Beckley Supper Club and met the owner Anna Milano. Wally and Anna married in 1958. Wally would work for Wilcox Manufacturing and then strike out on his own having owned several businesses. Wally was most proud of partnering with Anna to open the CHAR. He and Anna made their home in Pine Hills since 1974. In his leisure time, he enjoyed gun collecting, sporting clays, vintage cars, and motorcycles. Anna Lorenz died on Dec.2nd, 2005. Wally leaves to cherish his memory his son, Bill Browskey; his granddaughter, Kimberly Howell and her fiancé, Gary Fairchild and two great grandchildren, children, Doss Howell and his wife, Amy and Kelli Brooks and her husband, Jason. There are three great great grandchildren, Collin, Gavin and Peyton. Wally leaves his best friend, Beverly Hopkins and her husband, Kevin. In addition to his parents, and Anna, Wally was preceded in death by his daughter- in-law, Patty Browskey and her brother, Tony Lusk in 2011. Wally Lorenz will be remembered as an avid New York Giants fan. On Tuesday, January 24th, at 1:00 pm there will be a “Service of Remembrance” for Wally at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Roy Gene Crist will be officiating. Wally will then be entombed in the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum beside his beloved Anna. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am until the service hour. Pallbearers will be Keith Worley, Sonny Peterson, Bill Via, Jimmy Bonham, Frank Wills, Doss Howell, Jason Brooks, and Jack Massey. GO GIANTS!
