Buchanan, Garland Lugene

August 01, 1930 - February 01, 2010

On this Monday, February, 1, 2010 our brother, uncle and good friend, Lugene Buchanan passed away peacefully at his home in Stanaford Acres. He was in his 79th year. Born Garland Lugene Buchanan on August 1, 1930 in Beckley he was the youngest of three sons born to the late Garland Campbell and Olga McCall Buchanan. Lugene as he was affectionately known all his life spent his childhood on Lee Street. He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1948. He attended Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburg, PA, where he received a degree in mechanical engineering. For many years, Lugene lived in Grapevine Texas and Melbourne, Florida. He worked for NASA. In Texas he met his beloved wife, the late Betty Reynolds who preceded him in death in 1989. In 1975, Lugene returned to Beckley where he entered the family business, the Buchanan Corporation. He served as secretary and treasurer of the company. Lugene loved to hunt and was deeply involved with the Buchanan family wild game farm, Pine Acres at Hillsboro in Pocahontas County. In later years he has attended early services at the United Methodist Temple with his good friend, Betty Foster Jarrell who survives him. Left to cherish his memories are his family, brothers, William (Bill) Buchanan and Lewis C. Buchanan and his wife, Joyce all of Beckley; nieces, Anna Bell Rener and her husband Sam, Marilyn Guffy and her husband Joe, Sherry Via and her husband, Roger; he was the dear great uncle of several nephews and nieces. Lugene was preceded in death by his nephew, Larry Buchanan and his sister-in-law, Violet Earl Buchanan; Larry’s widow, Carolyn Buchanan Garten also survives, as well as many friends, neighbors, classmates and his ever loyal canine companion, Muffin. At the end of the day when we remember Lugene Buchanan we recall a bright articulate man, a man who loved to read, a quiet giver, a man who loved animals and the outdoors. Funeral services will be Wednesday, February 3rd, at 1:00 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Chuck Pullins officiating. Lugene will then be laid to rest beside his beloved wife Betty at the Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley. The family will receive friends from noon until the hour of the service. Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
