Daniel, Raymond

April 30, 1921 - February 18, 2010

On Thursday evening, February 18, 2010, our cherished Raymond Daniel went to be with the Lord at his home in Bolt surrounded by his family. He had been in declining health for a number of years. Raymond was in his 88th year. Born at Saxon on April 30, 1921, he was the third of 11 children born to the late Thurman and Eliza Pettry Daniel. Brothers, Carl, Clyde, Arthur, Winford and Quinford Daniel; sisters, Arizona Daniel and Marie Henry preceded him in death. “Sarge” as he was affectionately known all his life spent his childhood at Saxon where he lived for many years. He was a decorated veteran of the US Army serving in WWII. A coal miner, Raymond began his career at Montcoal retiring from the Raleigh Wyoming Coal Company. He had 26 years in the mining industry. After leaving the mines, Raymond worked for the West Virginia Dept. of Highways for ten years. A resident of Bolt since 1977, he was member of the Cove Creek Community Church and VFW Post 11307 at Bolt. At the end of the day when we remember Raymond we recall his great love for outdoors. He loved to ginseng. Way into his eighties, before his health began to fail, he would walk the mountains and woods near his childhood home. And so, it is only fitting that this is where he will sleep now, near his parents and other family members that have gone on before him. On October 7, 1950, Raymond married his soul mate, the former, Anna Laura Cook. To this union was born eight children. He was the precious “ Daddy” to Wilma Noel of Bolt, Peggy Hall and her husband, the Rev. Garry Hall of Bolt, Reta Harvey and her husband Danny of Saxon, Sharon Milligan and her husband Robert of Spartanburg, SC, Rick Daniel and his wife Carla of Saxon Road, Mark Daniel and his wife Pam of Crab Orchard, Lois Dewese and her husband Shawn of Beckley and Gary Daniel and his wife Alicia of Beckley the doting “ Paw Paw” to Daniel Hall and his wife, Andrea, Jonathan Hall and his wife, Rebecca, Michael, Matthew and Anthony Harvey, Lindsay Acord and her husband Cody, Tara Vass and her husband, Charles, Ashley Daniel, Julia Milligan, Allison Daniel, Ce Ce Milligan, Branson and Carson Dewese, Mykal Daniel and Solomon Daniel; great grandchildren, Landon Hall, Samantha Milligan and Chase Acord; the fond brother of Kyle Daniel of Glen Daniel, Georgia Daniel and Elsie Vanetta both of Beckley; a large extended family and many old friends and neighbors. On Sunday, February 21st, at 3:00 p.m. we will remember the life of Raymond Daniel with a service at Melton Mortuary. The Rev. Cleve Allen will be officiating. The family will receive friend’s from1:00 p.m. until the service time. Raymond will then be taken to Saxon to his family burying ground where he will be laid to rest. Due to the inclement weather, the burial will be private. The family suggests donations of sympathy can be made to the Building Fund of the Cove Creek community Church, c/o Danny Harvey, 1285 Pine Branch Road, Saxon, WV 25180. So “Go Rest High on the Mountain” dear Raymond and know that you are loved.
