On Tuesday, February 23, 2010 our precious sister, aunt, and good friend to many people, June Philyaw of Dixon Avenue, Beckley passed away at the Raleigh General Hospital following a short illness. She was in her 75th year. Born Dorothy June Allen on February 18, 1935 at McGraws, June as she was affectionately know all her life, was the 6th of seven children born to the late Robert Lee and Ila Mae Shields Allen. Brothers, Claude and Floyd Allen and sisters, Ethel Eller and Cynthia Lafferty preceded her in death. June spent her childhood at Ravencliff. A resident of Dixon Avenue for the past 45 years, she was of the Christian faith. In her leisure time she enjoyed crafting. June was married to the late Roy Philyaw who preceded her in death on Dec. 3, 1989. Roy’s son, Fon and his wife Stella have also passed away. June Philyaw was a woman of boundless energy. At the age of 67 she decided to go back to work. A housekeeper at Raleigh General Hospital she worked on 4 South and SICU. Anybody that knew June knew you would get a full day’s work from her and then some. She had great compassion for the patients and their families, often running errands for them on her own time. Left to cherish her memory are a sister and brother, Mary Sams of Glen Rogers and Sidney Allen and his wife Letha of Ravencliff who will miss her very much; her late husband’s grandchildren, Sandy Louden and Rick Philyaw; a large extended family of nieces and nephews, among them Judy Day and Patricia Richardson who will remember her as an “awesome woman and a second mother.” This Saturday, February 27th at 1:00 p.m. we will remember the life of June at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev.’s Doug Walls and Dewey Lowe officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park at Beckley. The family will receive friends from noon until the service hour. Due to the inclement weather, the committal service will be held at Meltons following the services.
