Denver Harper Obituary

On Monday, December 30, 2019, Denver “Dale” Harper Sr. took his last breath here on earth and his next in the heavenly home he longed for. Dale had suffered a long courageous battle with cancer. However, his love of sharing the good news of Christ to all who would listen never wavered. A few days before he was called home, he was able to lead his close friend, Nelson, to the Lord; a testimony of his faith and love for his Savior. He was a man of faith and a strong believer in the power of prayer.

Denver “Dale” Harper was born on January 17, 1943 in Raleigh County to the late Dennis and Nettie Linkious Harper.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma Ellis Harper and infant son, Dennis, a brother Staff Sergeant Dennis Harper, Jr. killed in Vietnam in 1966.

He loved his wife and high school sweetheart, Sharon, who faithfully loved and care for his every need until his very last breath.

Dale was a 50-year resident of Amigo and Rhodell area. A retired coal miner and member of the United Mine Workers Local Union.

He enjoyed gardening, selling old cars, watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and discussing religion and politics but mostly he loved time with his family and friends, and his dog Ginny. He will be remembered for his generosity and love by many.

Left behind to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 24 years, Sharon of Beckley; his sons, Denver Dale Harper, Jr. of Rhodell; Matthew Harper (Tiffany) of Beckley; one daughter, Tina Suttle of Beckley; step-son, Robbie Hensley (Tracy) of Richmond, VA; step-daughters, Sherry (Mike) of Grifton NC; Susan Alton (Pat) of Fayetteville; 15 grandchildren, plus one on the way and 12 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Bernard Harper (Connie) and Johnny Harper; his sisters, Jewell Perkins, Linda Vroman, Gladys Carte, Debra Cox, Joyce Ann Chapman and Mary Harper; his mother-n-law, Kathleen Kershner, who he loved as his own and a longtime friend he thought of as his son, Nelson Hernandez and his wife BJ; as well as many other loved ones and friends; and his canine companion, Ginny.
