James Kenneth Carper, 88, died on February 1, 2019. Jim was born August 19, 1930, to Wesley and Lillian McClure Carper. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Betty; son Pete; sister, Magaret Ann Maddy; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law. He is survived by daughter, Lynda Gilkerson; brother, Bob Carper; grandchildren, Stephanie Barnes, Kenneth Carper, Nicole Stuntz; two great granddaughter, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Jim was a lifelong resident of Grandview and a member of the Grandview Christian Church. He was the developer of Beechwood and other properties in Grandview. He owned and operated business including Carper Excavating, Grandview Crushed White Sand, a black Angus cattle farm at Grandview, and was a decades long heavy equipment contractor with New River Coal Company. He was a hard working man, a true friend, and known as a man whose word and a handshake were a binding contract.
Jim and Betty loved to traveling in their motor home, and enjoyed exploring from Alaska to Key West and everywhere in between. Their grandchildren have wonderful memories of trips with them. He was an amazing historian, with stories about adventures and family through the generations. Always, before everything else, his commitment was to his wife, children and grandchildren.
Service will be Tuesday, February 5, at 2PM at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon.
