Ruth Marie (Thomas) Hurt

Ruth Marie Thomas Hurt, 81, of Mabscott, WV passed away Monday, March 4th, 2019 at Bowers Hospice House surrounded by family and friends.

Born August 6th, 1937 in Nashville, TN she moved shortly to Akron, Oh where she lived until moving to Mabscott, WV in 1961.  She was the daughter of the late Bruce and Gertrude Thomas.

In addition to her parents, she is proceeded in death by ex-husband Charles B. Hurt and brothers Alfred and Art Thomas. 

Those left to cherish her memory include daughter Jill (Terry) Adams of Shady Spring, Brad (Shawna) Hurt of Daniels, Beth (Roger) Johnson of Beaver; grandchildren Bobby (Jaclyn) Adams, Ashley (David) Betkijian, Samantha Poche, Blaine Johnson and Claire Johnson; great-grandchild Mason, Anna Kate, Barrett and Hudson.  She will be missed greatly by best friend and secret keeper Sandra Boland also her son from another mother, Keith Furrow.

Ruth was a 30 year employee of the Raleigh County Board of Education which included secretary at Mabscott Elementary, payroll clerk and substitute coordinator.  She was very active in the School Service Personnel Association where she served as president on both the county and state level.  She also served on the West Virginia Teachers Retirement Board.  She was a member of Oak Grove Christian Church.

Ruth was loved by all who met her and loved doing things for others.  Ruth was also was a master of delegating, mostly being accomplished by her children and grandchildren and then taking all the credit when her projects were done.  She loved sitting on her porch looking at her dogwoods and rhododendrons in full bloom.  She also enjoyed talking on the phone keeping up with the daily gossip.  Ruth loved spending time with her grandkids and great-grandkids.

The family wants to thanks the SICU at Raleigh General Hospital and the staff at Bowers Hospice House for the wonderful care that they gave to Ruth.

Funeral services will be on Saturday March 9th, 2019 at Oak Grove Christian Church 273 Oak Grove Road Beckley, WV at 2 p.m. with John Whitten officiating.  Burial will follow at Oak Grove Christian Church.  Friends may visit with the family from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday.  Pallbearers will be Ross Lewis, David Parks, Scott Stanley, Greg Betkijian, Rick Hanson and Randy Hanson. 

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations to be made to Bowers Hospice House or Oak Grove Christian Church.
