Zora Pettry Obituary

Zora Pettry

Our special angel, Zora Elizabeth Hatcher Pettry gained her wings in the early morning hours of Tuesday,  August 6th, 2019, with her family by her side.

Zora was born on May 12th, 1920 at Thurmond.  She was the daughter of the James Berg and Ethel Morton Hatcher. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Howard Pettry; brother, James Hatcher and sister and brother-in-law, Margot and George Mickel.

Left to cherish her memory are her devoted daughters, Susan (Frank) Nett and Margot (Bob) Bowers; she was the proud grandmother of four grandchildren, Lisa (Reed) Lose, Bobby (Carla) Bowers, Bruce (Darcy) Vest and Allyson Pierce; Zora was blessed and enjoyed her great-grandchildren, Addison and Trent Lose; Nathan, Ella, Lily and Brodie Vest, Bobby B. and Brooks Bowers and Hadley Pierce; long- time friend, Carol Cadle; Zora was the dear aunt of Mary Arnold and Elaine Whaley; and the fond great aunt of David “Charlie” (Denise) Hatcher; we would be remiss not to remember  her wonderful caregivers of the last months, Beth, Tina and Dee.

“Big Z” as she was nicknamed by some lived a full and happy 99 years.  She made many friends and memories working at the Veterans Area Medical Center and attending St. Stephens Episcopal Church.

The Burial of the Dead, Rite One will be celebrated on Friday, August 9th at 11:00 am in St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 200 Virginia Street, Beckley.  Mother Susan Claytor will be the celebrant.  Zora will be laid to rest in the Chapel of Hope Mausoleum at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.   The family will receive friends in the church library at 10:00 am.  The honor of carrying Zora has been given to Larry Walker, John White, Larry Robertson, Scott Stanley, Jan Dasko and Chris Lucas.
