Anna Maxine Wahl, 93, of Fairdale, passed from this life Oct. 7, 2023. She was born April 5, 1930, the daughter of Jesse and Audrey (Phipps) Wahl, of Fairdale. Maxine was a 1949 graduate of Trap Hill High School. She lived most of her adult life in Dayton, Ohio, where she retired from a 30-year career in the accounting department of NCR Corp. before returning to Fairdale.
Maxine-Macky to her family-is survived by her brother, Don Wahl and his wife, Treva, of Lester; three sisters: Carol Phillips of Brunswick, OH; Shirley Daniel of Kingston, TN; and Marcia Elaine Gay and husband, Ed, of Tega Cay, SC.; 14 nieces and nephews, and many more great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Edith and Janice; and brother, Roger.
Maxine was beloved by all who knew her. She had the perfect combination of strong spirit, gentle disposition, and zest for life. She was a loving and helpful daughter and sister and a loyal friend.
To her many nieces and nephews, she was Aunt Macky, always ready with a big smile, twinkling eyes, and outstretched arms. Some remember her fondly on annual summer trips to King's Island and Myrtle Beach, and lots of time outside in nature. Macky loved her nature walks and could name many flowers and birds. She also amazed everyone with her ability to spot four-leaf clovers. If they bring good luck, then Macky was one of the luckiest people around.
Maxine was small in stature, but huge to those who knew her. Her friend, Dolores Daniel, remembers her this way: "Maxine was my lifelong friend-my friend of more than 80 years. I always knew her or knew of her. We went all through school together. We used to giggle in class. I can still hear her laugh. She had a wonderful sense of humor, but she was also a strong and determined person. If she wanted to do something, she figured out a way to do it.
"There was nothing fake about Maxine. She was always herself."
Maxine graduated from Trap Hill High School in 1949. She worked at the G.C. Murphy Co. in Beckley, and soon after moved to Dayton, Ohio, and began work at NCR.
Maxine will be missed by all who knew her. Visitation will be from 10:30 - 11:30 am on Wed. Oct. 11, 2023 at Melton Mortuary. Graveside service will be at 12:00 Noon at Sunset Memorial Park. Words of comfort and expressions of sympathy may be offered to the family by visiting www.meltonmortuary.com
