Carol Ann Porterfield Sellards, 78, of Beckley, died October 18, 2021 at Bowers Hospice House following an illness caused by a rare type of lymphoma.
Born April 1, 1943, she was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Beulah Morgan Porterfield, Claude and Esten Porterfield Lucas, and two brothers, Robert Issac and Bernard Lee.
Survivors include her husband, Duane; a son, John and his wife, Chrissy and their children Rocco Francis and Leon Carl; a daughter-in-law Valerie and her daughter Caroline Elizabeth; two brothers, Mannix Alexander of Beckley, and Larry Allen of Stanaford, plus devoted caregivers Gwendolyn Bias and Christina Changes.
Carol Ann was a proud 1961 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School where she served as a class officer for three years, was chosen by beloved band director Glen Sallack to lead the band as head majorette her senior year, was selected Homecoming Queen her senior year, and was named Citizenship Girl by the faculty.
She earned a B.S. in education from Concord College and taught in the Raleigh County school system at Trap Hill Middle School, and then worked as an adjunct professor teaching political science and history at the College of West Virginia.
Her interests included collecting stained glass, reading, politics, and history.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Beckley.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM at Melton Mortuary on Thursday, October 21, with Dr. Phil Smith and Rev. Carl Sellards officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family from 12:00 until 2:00 PM. Special family friends will be pallbearers.
