Charles Harry Gunther Obituary

Charles (Charlie) Harry Gunther

MacArthur WV

11/19/1932 - 10/29/2025

Charles Gunther, affectionately known as PawPaw to all of his grandkids, great grandkids, and dozens of other children throughout his life, was a kind, disciplined man who enjoyed a simple, fulfilling life.

Charlie was a proud husband, father & grandfather, but he was most proud of being a Marine. He served his country in the Korean War, where he deployed as a Staff Sergeant in the 1st Marine Tank Battalion. Upon returning stateside, he continued to serve as a reservist while transitioning through multiple careers, culminating as a transportation specialist for Flowers Bakery in Beckley, WV.

He also spent over 30 years on staff at Grandview Country Club, where he was a fixture in the clubhouse throughout his later years. Charlie always brought a smile to anyone coming or going from the course and would spend his days taking care of the cattle in the barn or driving his golf cart out to his favorite hole, the 15th.

Charlie died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 92.

He is survived by his daughter Sherri Thomas, grandchildren: Lindsey (Chaz) Naumann, Jay (Diana) Thomas, Nikole (Aaron) Alliston and Erik Gunther, great grandchildren: Eli, Isaac, & Luke Naumann, Corbin & Colbie Thomas, brother-in-law David (Gwen) Lively, and sister-in-law Hazel Gunther.

Charlie is preceded in death by his wife Lena, son Jerry, parents Colonel H and Bessie Gunther, son in law Gary Thomas, sisters Betty Jane Gunther, Janet Gravely and his brothers Robert and Johnny Gunther

A celebration of life will be held at Grandview Country Club at a date TBD.
