On Sunday, December 22, 2019 Charles Joseph “Joe” Sloan, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV. He was 79 years old. 
 
Joe was born on September 21, 1940 in Edwight, WV. The second son of seven boys, to Norman and Mary (Price) Sloan. In 1957 he joined the U.S. National Guards then called up for active duty, serving his country for 6 years. On July 31, 1961, he married the love of his life, Virginia “Jennie” Sloan and enjoyed 58 loving and successful years of marriage. They raised two sons, Joey and Billy and granddaughter Stephanie, who they raised as their daughter.
 
Joe lived a full life enjoying bowling and fishing in his younger years, caring for his dogs, Sparky and Little Bit, and playing with his grandkids. Later in life his hobbies were tinkering with cars, several years of gardening and taking great pride in his yard. He was an excellent diesel mechanic, working for Lewis Terminal for nearly 50 years, retiring at the age of 72. He was a member of Stanaford Missionary Baptist Church where he and his great nephew Chad Sloan were Baptized together. 
 
He could always put a smile on everyone’s face with his quick wit and funny jokes. He was known for his honest, kind and gentle spirit. He truly loved his family, and was an excellent provider and protector for them. Joe will leave a piece of himself in the hearts of everyone that ever knew him.
 
Joe was preceded in death by his father Norman Joseph and mother Mary Jane Sloan, younger brother James Edward “Jimmy” Sloan and father and mother-in-law, William H. and Nancy V. Romine. He is survived by his wife Virginia Lee “Jennie” Sloan, sons Charles Joseph II “Joe”, and wife Debbie of Pfafftown, NC. and William Todd “Bill” Sloan of Beckley, WV. granddaughter Stephanie Leigh Tate and husband Joseph great granddaughter Reina Rose Tate of Beckley, WV. Grandson Joey Sloan and Granddaughter Maria Boone both of NC. Grandson Chase Sloan of Beckley WV and Granddaughter Carlee Sloan of NC. And 4 great grandchildren. 
 
He is also survived by five brothers: John Norman “Sonny” wife Carol Sloan of Carlisle, PA; Seibert C. wife Sharon Sloan of Millersville MD; Billy Ray wife Brenda Sloan of Beckley, WV; Robert Lee “Bobby” and wife Diane Sloan of Glen Daniel, WV; and Michael Wayne “Mike” wife Diane Sloan of Pittsburg, NC, as well as several nieces and nephews.
 
A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 30, 2019 at 1:00pm with visitation starting at noon at Melton Mortuary. Pallbearers will be nephews Robert Sloan and Mark Wayne
Clyburn, great nephews Chad Sloan and Jacob Miller, close family friends Mike Sweeney and Ernie Dawson.
