Donna Varney Obituary

Donna Sue Varney

“ Tis love that calls us home at the close of day…..”

In the early hours of Sunday morning, December 20th, 2020, the love of God called our sweet Donna Sue Varney to Heaven after a long and brave struggle.  She went peacefully in the comfort of her own home with her loving husband and faithful caregiver, Junior by her side.

One of three children, Donna Sue Reed was born on April 5th, 1950.  She was the daughter of the late Thurman Austin and Wanda Marie Rakes Reed.  Her mother passed on the following day of Donna’s death. A sister, Brenda has preceded Donna in death as well.   One brother, Danny survives as well her niece, Connie Bragg.

Donna spent her childhood at Blue Jay, graduating from Shady Spring High School, Class of 1968.   A graduate of Bluefield State College, Donna had a career in public administration, first working for West Virginia Tech, retiring as Director of Admissions at the West Virginia Osteopathic School of Medicine in Lewisburg.

From her first marriage, Donna had a son, Russell Darlington.   Rusty is married to Kimberly and they have a son, Jack.

In the early 1990’s, while traveling on a WVU Bowl trip, Donna shared a seat with Junior Varney.  Avid WVU fans they found out they had a lot in common, one being they shared the same birthdays.  And as they say, “The rest is history.”   Donna and Junior shared a wonderful marriage of 28 years, traveling to WVU games home and away, they enjoyed the fellowship of being members of Memorial Baptist Church where both were very active in the church.   It didn’t take long being around Donna and Junior to know they were very happy and were soul mates.   The last five years of Donna’s life has been very challenging due to her catastrophic illness.  Junior never gave up trying to make Donna’s life one of quality.

The love of God carried Donna and Junior through the last five years, the love of God called her to a sweet and well rewarded rest on that early Sunday morning.   May she forever rest in peace.

On Monday, January 4th at 1:00 pm we will honor the life of Donna Sue Varney with a “Service of Remembrance” at the Memorial Baptist Church.  Dr. James Boyd and Dr. Charles Bright will be officiating.  Friends may visit beginning at 12 noon.
