Evelyn Elizabeth Harvey (née Thompson), affectionately known as Emmy, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by family on January 13, 2026, in Cool Ridge, West Virginia. She was 93.
Born on March 31, 1932, in Odd, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Lessie Thompson. She spent her childhood in Odd and Cool Ridge, West Virginia, and attended Shady Spring High School. Some years later she enrolled in Beckley College and graduated four years later from Morris Harvey College with a bachelor's degree in elementary education.
Evelyn taught school for a few years. Later she became employed as a social worker for the Department of Human Services, from where she retired after many years of loyal service. She found great satisfaction in her job through assisting families with adopting a child.
She enjoyed traveling, cooking, and taking walks with her family. She was an avid reader, especially enjoying historical fiction. In her later years, she particularly enjoyed bird watching from her family room window.
Her greatest passion was for her family. She married the love of her life, Franklin O. Harvey, on May 27, 1947. They were married for 57 years. She was the devoted mother of Stephen Lewis Harvey and his wife Connie, of Cool Ridge and Deonne Elaine Harvey Schenk and her husband, Bruce Schenk of Loveland, Ohio; devoted grandmother of Adam Franklin and his wife Dorothy; Aaron Stephen Harvey and his wife Daryen; Brian Schenk and his wife Caress; Steven Schenk and his wife Tracy. She was proud to be a great-grandmother to Abigail, Elijah and Charlotte Harvey, Malcolm, August and Eloise Schenk and Brooklyn Schenk.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at 11:00 am at Melton Mortuary Chapel, 1200 Harper Road, Beckley, West Virginia with Pastor Matthew Hill officiating.
