Evelyn Kathleen Moses, age 82, of Crab Orchard, West Virginia, peacefully passed away Friday,
December 5, 2025, in her home following a month-long illness. Evelyn was affectionately
known as Poochie to all who loved her.
Evelyn was born November 24, 1943, in Beckley, West Virginia, the daughter of Daniel Childs
and Clara Bonham Childs. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Patricia Hall,
brother-in-law who was like a brother, Thomas Fred McKinney, her former husband, Ibra
Leonard Moses, Jr., and long-time boyfriend, Jim Surbaugh, both of whom she took care of
during their final months, as well as her grandparents and numerous close aunts, uncles, and dear
friends.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Deborah "Deb" (Fred) Lamey; sister, Verdie "Took" Blanche
McKinney; brother, Daniel "Bo" (Carol) Childs; special aunt, Ruth Carol (Wayne) Peters;
uncles, Donald Bonham and Jim Lytton; and Robert Cooper, who was like a son to her. She is
also survived by cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and
nephews who were adored by her and loved her deeply.
Evelyn graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. During her life, she worked for
Highlander Florist for many years as a floral designer. She was very passionate and talented at
this, and she continued to make bows and arrangements for family weddings and functions right
up until her current illness. Evelyn also worked for and retired from CVS Pharmacy as a cashier,
where she made lifetime friends.
In her spare time, Evelyn could be found at the many theaters around West Virginia and
surrounding states enjoying any kind of live performance, and especially those involving her
daughter and many close friends who performed. She loved trips of all kinds traveling with
family and friends, and her favorites usually involved family "babies," ranging from newborn to
60, that she could spoil.
Evelyn had close and special relationships with her nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and even great-great-nieces and nephews. Nothing brought her more joy than seeing
pictures, videos, and visiting in person with her family. Although she was not a sports fan, she
could always be found at any sports event supporting her great nieces and nephews. Her love
and support for them was ever present.
Later in life, Evelyn discovered a love for hiking and the outdoors. One of her proudest
moments was when she completed the 100-Mile Challenge in 2018 hiking in the New River
Gorge with her dear friend, Linda Burgin, and her daughter and friends. She also conquered her
fear of water by rafting on the Upper New River with friends and family.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, with light hors d'oeuvres and
drinks and visiting from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, and a prayer and remembrance service at 6:00 PM
at The Gym at Orchard Park (the old Crab Orchard Elementary School), 1404 Robert C. Byrd
Drive, Crab Orchard, WV 25827. Everyone is welcome to attend and share a memory or story
about Evelyn, or Poochie. Evelyn was cremated as she wished, and the family requests that
instead of flowers or gifts, that a donation be given in her memory to Hospice of Southern WV
or the Historic Fayette Theater which Evelyn enjoyed supporting so much.
