Frances Janet Oney, "Janet" 90, of Lexington, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2025. Born in Killarney, West Virginia, to Clyde and Nannie Oney. Janet lived a long and meaningful life devoted to service, compassion, and care.
A graduate of the University of Virginia School of Nursing, she worked at UVA Hospital in Charlottesville for many years, where she served as Chief Nurse and mentored countless young nurses. Janet was known for her dedication to children's health, especially her work in cystic fibrosis care, and her lifelong commitment to helping others.
Beyond her career, she loved to travel, cook, sew, and make crafts, visiting with friends and family, and was a huge devoted fan of University of Virginia and University of Kentucky sports, watching all games, especially basketball. Her kindness, sharp wit, and quiet strength touched everyone who knew her.
She is survived by her niece Elizabeth Holcomb Ellison, great nephews Ryan and Drew, great-niece Kaitlyn, and five great-great-nephews, and many beloved cousins. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Clyde and Nannie Oney and sisters Elizabeth "Libby" Oney, and Jewell Holcomb.
Funeral services will be held in her hometown of Beckley, West Virginia, at Melton Mortuary on Sunday October 12th, 2025 at 12:00 noon. Janet will be laid to rest on Monday October 13th, 2025 at 11 am at Sunset Memorial Park. Those wishing to attend the burial need to be at Melton Mortuary by 10:30 am.
