On Wednesday, September 13th, 2023 our most cherished, Fred McGroary passed away in the comfort of his home as he so wished to do.
Frederick Joseph McGroary was born 86 years ago in Jersey City, New Jersey. He was the son of Frederick Joseph and Julia Kearns McGroary. Fred as he was affectionately known, spent his formative years in northern New Jersey. After graduating Dumont high school, he enlisted in the Navy. He was sent to great Lakes training center. During his induction physical it was decided he needed surgery that ultimately led to his honorable discharge for medical reasons. While in the hospital during this time, he met a cute USO volunteer, named Marlene Julia Klaric. Always impulsive, Fred stayed in Milwaukee, wooed and married Marlene. After a stint putting in every other dome light in ramblers, they moved back to New Jersey
While working for a New York City factoring company, he visited Gilbert, West Virginia to meet Lucky Compton about equipment. Lucky suggested he come work for him and he did-three piece suit and all.
Fred and Marlene moved to Beckley, West Virginia to work with Kenny Compton, Lucky's son, and settled in. Fred and Marlene lived in Beckley for many years, where they worshiped at St. Francis de Sales Church. Marlene passed on November 15th, 2011. Fred is the dear brother of John Wright of North Dakota.
As with all of us, there is much more to our lives - good and bad. Suffice it to say if you met Fred, you remembered him. Most liked him.
The Rite of Committal will be Tuesday, September 19th at 1:00 pm at St. Sebastian Cemetery in Beckley. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 12:45 pm. Fred will laid to rest beside his beloved Marlene.
We his family would be remiss not to acknowledge an extremely great local friend, Karen Creager.
Fred has been rather ill and on dialysis for the last four years. During this time Karen supervised Fred's 24 hour care at his home. She promised him that he would die at home and so he did. God Bless you Karen.
