Gladys Minnie (Brinegar) Akers, born January 29, 1933 to Jasper Allen Brinegar and Lora Amelia (Williams) Brinegar, passed at her home in Daniels, WV with her family by her side on December 10, 2024.
She grew up on the mountains around Hinton, WV until she traveled to Radford, Virginia to work at the Hercules Powder Plant where she met her husband Hobert Berkley Akers. Together they raised 5 children.
She was a member of the Church of Christ and a living example of faithfulness who often showed her love through food. She provided many meals for people who had lost loved ones or were dealing with illness or troubling times, and her name was always on the list to feed visiting preachers. She was famous for her calico beans, green beans (from her garden, of course), and "sawmill" gravy at potluck gatherings.
She welcomed many people into her home over the years, and many children loved her and didn't want to leave when it was time to go. Many children thought of her as Mamaw even though they were not related to her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 8 siblings, and her husband. Those left to remember her and celebrate her life include five children, Allen (Mitzi) Akers of Shady Spring, WV, Barry (Barbara) Akers of Cool Ridge, WV, Kevin Akers of Daniels, WV, Sandra (Frank) Willis, of Daniels, WV and Andrea Thomas of Daniels, WV, one sister, Cecilia Gail Martin, 10 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Melton Mortuary on Saturday, December 14, 2024 at 1:00 pm, with visitation beforehand beginning at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Please visit www.meltonmortuary.com to leave a condolence to her family.
