Harold Haymond Gore
Harold Haymond Gore, age 98, was born June 17th, 1924 in Lovern, West Virginia (Cashes Hill) to the union of Levi Mejellian Gore and Minerva Hargro Gore.
During Harold’s life, he graduated from numerous institutions of higher learning, earning degrees and accolades too numerous to single out separately.
During his work history, Harold was blessed to work at the U.S. Treasurer Department and was a guest lecturer on history at Howard University in Washington, DC. His work afforded him the opportunity to know John F. Kennedy personally, who would go on to become the 35th President of the United States.
A veteran of the United States Navy, Harold was a member of the American Legion.
A scholar since childhood, he volunteered as an Adult Basic Education teacher for the State of West Virginia upon his retirement.
A devout Catholic since youth, he was a faithful member of the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Beckley, WV, volunteering on many church boards as needed.
He was preceded in death by his infant son, Haymond Levi Gore; his parents and stepfather, Don Barnett; grandparents, Levi and Harriette (Wrencher) Gore Tucker and Estella (Walker) Hargro; brothers, Acie Mejellian and James Earl Gore; sister-in-law, Ersula (Tooley) Gore; nephews, Darnell and Robert; and sister/cousins: Bernice Smith and Edna (Tiny) Stevens; special friends: Eugene (Scoppy) Javis, Sampson Baldwin, Drucilla Melvin, Mr. and Mrs. Medley, Rev. Ully “Sis” Phipps of Indianapolis, IN, Rev Clarence Arnold of Chicago, IL, and Dec. Ernest Oliver of Beckley, as well as his favorite, Pooch Trixie.
Those left to cherish Dad’s memory include his adopted son, William Stevens of Kent, Ohio with he made his home during his final days; his honorary godson, Kenneth (Renee) Smith of NC; several nieces and nephews; several grand and great-grandchildren, numerous cousins; and endless friends/caregivers, Ann and Andre Thomas; son, AJ; cousins, Stephanie and Anita Handcock and Melody Newman .

The Mass of Christian will be offered on Tuesday, November 15th at 11:00 am in the St. Francis de Sales Church here in Beckley. Rev. Fr. Leonard Smith will be the celebrant. The Rite of Committal will follow in the Greenlawn Memorial Park in Beckley. Harold will lie in repose on Monday, November 14th from 6 to 8 pm in the Melton Mortuary Chapel. There will be vigil prayer service at 7:30 pm.
