Helen Spencer Obituary

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. On February 2, 2024 the heavens opened wide and welcomed home our beloved mother, nana, aunt, friend, and neighbor Helen (Vivian) Giompalo Spencer at the age of 92. She died at home surrounded by her family in the very room where she was brought into the world nearly 93 years ago.
Vivian was born April 15, 1931 in Beckley, WV to parents Domnick and Antoinette (Pietroantonia ) Giompalo. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1949 and worshiped at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church.
She married Charles Spencer on June 23, 1956 and that union bore three children Bob, David, and Barbra. She loved and cherished her role as a homemaker, mother, and grandmother.
In addition to her parents, she has been preceded in death by her husband Charles, son David, her siblings and their spouses, Tony (Margaret), Nick (Helen), Jim, Joe (Mary) Giompalo, Rose (Frank) Boyan, Jewel (Alipio) Loma and Jean (Bill) Swatzyna and nephew John Giompalo.
She is survived by her son Bob (Robyn), Lisa (David's wife), and daughter Barbra Spencer. Grandchildren Robby (Emerald), Will (Kristan), Emily Aliff (Shawn Flowers), Thomas Spencer, Jessica (Gabe) Cobb, Jenna (Chris) Holloway, Daylan and Storri Spencer. Great grandchildren Kennedi, Charleigh, Ethan, Selah, Alisyn Spencer, Raylee Aliff, Nicolas and Sophia Cobb and Kellen Flowers.
Nephews and Nieces David (Elaine), Joseph, and Tom (Cathy)Giompalo, Jean (Bruce) Boone, Alice Richeson, Annette (Skip) Jennings, and Sandra (Will) Groves. Special neighbors Terry, Marsha, and Chad McLemore. Special ladies Patty Wilson, Patti Barton, Margie Cimala, Linda Shaffer,
Nancy Caruso, Betty Serreno-Morales and a host of other friends and family.
Vivian's legacy of welcoming and helping others will provide comfort to lead her friends and family through life's journey.
The family would like to thank first and foremost her special neighbor Georgia Berry who she loved dearly, thought of as family and is now a part of our family, Dr. Kelly Pitsenbarger, Hospice of Southern WV, and Melton's mortuary.
Pallbearers will be Robby, Will, Thomas, and Daylan Spencer, Chris Boone and Joseph A. Giompalo. Honorary Pallbearers will be Tom Lewis, Terry McLemore, Bryan Giompalo, Dr. Kelly Pitsenbarger, Mark Anderson, Don Anderson, Jan Worthington, Mike Kosco and Gerald Kosnoski.
The Services will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Beckley on Saturday February 10, 2024. Visitation will be from 10:00 am till noon and at that time Fr. Leonard Smith and Fr. Chapin Engler will concelebrate the funeral mass. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Southern WV or the Beaver/Beckley Lions Club.
