Howard Sheppard Obituary

Howard Perry Sheppard of Kopperston, WV peacefully went on his eternal journey on Sunday, March 22, 2020 at Bower’s Hospice House in Beckley, WV.

Howard was born on May 24, 1936 in Mingo County West Virginia to the late Sid Sheppard and Garnell Goodwin Sheppard.

Howard was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers: Maxine Jude, Rosalie Balderson, Boots ”Jack” Sheppard, and Donald Sheppard.

Howard was a gentle giant to all who knew him.  You knew how much they loved him when they called him “Honk” or ”Howie”.  He was an avid outdoorsman.  He loved hunting, blackberry picking, ginsenging, and front porch sitting while eating ice cream. Howard was known to be a card player and enjoyed playing bingo.  He was an amazing cook and made the most delicious fried potatoes, banana bread, and peanut butter cookies that he freely shared with his friends, family, and neighbors.  Howard was passionate about history knowledge, reading, politics, and WVU sports.  He coached his wife's women’s league softball team and he also umpired for the local Little League.  Howard was a United States Army Veteran where he served as a paratrooper in the Korean War.  He retired from his excavating business where he was respected by his customers who often became lifelong friends.  Howard's children and grandchildren were the true lights of his life.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 47 years, Patricia ”Patty” Wooten Sheppard; his daughter, Vendi Stable of Kopperston; his son, Aaron Sheppard and his wife Stacie Sheppard of Charleston, WV; his two grandsons, Duff Stable and Lennon Stable of Kopperston; his granddaughter, Loyal Sheppard of Charleston; his two sisters, Darlene Walker of Kopperston and Debbie Hannah and her husband Terry of Dahlgren, IN; niece, Lorrie Pafford and her husband Chris of Newark, DE; sister-in law, Sandra Goodwin and her husband Richard is Elizabeth, IN; brother-in-law, Sam Wooten and his wife Cathy of Roseville, MI; brother-in-law, Kenny Wooten and his wife Diane of Terrell, NC; brother-in-law, Donnie Wooten of Kopperston; Ronnie Wooten and his wife Carol of Owenton, KY; a host of nieces and nephews who loved and adored him.

The family is currently unable to have public services due to the environmental circumstances. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later a date.
