Imogene Wix
On Tuesday, August 25th 2020, in the presence of her devoted family, our most cherished, Imogene Wix passed into eternity . She was in her 89th year.
One of twelve children, Imogene was born on December 5th, 1930, in Wyoming County. She was the daughter of Luther and Florence Sargent Howerton. Brothers, Bennett, Roosevelt, Dewey, Johnny and Ernest and sisters, Gladys, Nellie, Fay and Marie have preceded her in death. She is the fond sister of Betty Squires of Alabama and Roger Howerton of Matoaka.
Imogene married James Wix on September 23rd, 1946. They made their home at Soak Creek since 1956, and were the devoted parents of Maybelle and Jesse who have passed and Shirley Pennington of Glen White; Jeanette Webb and her husband, John of Glen White; Frankie Wix and his wife, Laura of Beckley; Catherine Kincaid and her husband Jim of Crab Orchard and Michael Wix at home. James Wix died on April 10th, 2002, and now, “Oh Glad Reunion.” Imogene is also survived by Jesse’s wife, Rita.
When Imogene’s children remember their Mother, the words, “Love of family,” come to mind. Mom was all about family. She loved to garden and enjoyed quilting, but at the end of day it was all about her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Imogene was the proud “Granny” of 9 grandchildren, Steven who has passed and the living grandchildren are Ida Mae, Teresa, Eva, James, Billy, Amy, Jessica and Joe. There are several great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. She loved their company and being around all of them. We would be remiss not to tell you this about our Mother, she was feisty, she was sassy, she was the boss, she was in charge and we are going to miss this little lady something awful.
Imogene was raised on Lamar Mountain above Matoaka. She loved to go back and visit the cemetery where her parents and her infant daughter, Maybelle are buried. She loved to take “the old road” from Soak Creek back to Mullens up Herndon Mountain to the cemetery. This Friday, we will take Imogene back one last time to the Miller-Bailey Cemetery at Lamar. There she will rest. Not far by, is the property where she grew up as a child. So the circle becomes complete.
Imogene’s home going services will be Friday, August, 28th at 2:00 pm in the Melton Mortuary Chapel. The family will begin receiving friends at 12 noon. Pastor Larry Cochran will be officiating.
Family and friends, Mom would want everybody to be safe. Please follow social distancing and the wearing of masks at her service.
