James Edward Crouse
July 25, 1929 - December 28, 2025
James Edward Crouse, 96, died Sunday, December 28, 2025, at River Oaks Healthcare in Clarksburg, WV surrounded by his family.
Born July 25, 1929 in Tazewell, Virginia, he was the son of the late Greever and Stella (Rye) Crouse. In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by all his siblings: Greever Crouse, Jr., Ray Crouse, and Peggy Collier. He is survived by the love of his life, GayNell (Webb) Crouse, and they were married for 72 years. Ed and GayNell have one daughter, Susan Carlock and her husband, Mick, of Bridgeport, WV.
Ed loved his family which also included several nieces and nephews. He was blessed by the joy of family, both blood and bonus, always asking for the latest updates on everyone. He never met a stranger, and had a special gift with any child who crossed his path.
A native Virginian, Ed relocated to West Virginia after serving his country in the Army while stationed in Texas. His working career began in the grocery store, and that business remained in his blood until he retired as a salesman for several food brokers after 50 years. Work travel afforded him the blessings of many long-lasting friendships, and in addition to his brief case and sales samples, he always carried a fishing rod and tackle box in his car, just in case he was close to one of his favorite fishing spots at the end of his workday. He was a half-hearted golfer, enjoying being with buddies more than the game. Most spring and summer evenings, you could find Ed working in his yard or garden, and he loved sharing his "crop" with others.
Beckley was home for Ed and GayNell for almost 70 years. He was a member of the First Christian Church and served as an elder. He loved his church family and all the activities, whether serving communion, setting up tables for one of their famous pot luck dinners or volunteering in support of causes that were close to his heart.
Before moving to Bridgeport to be closer to Susan and Mick, Ed and GayNell enjoyed living at Greystone. While in Bridgeport, they lived at Harmony at White Oaks, and were able to spend more time together as a family. Ed enjoyed remarkably good health until the last couple of months, and lived a long and wonderful life.
A funeral service will take place for Mr Crouse on Monday January 5th 2025 with full military honors in the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum at 1:00pm with the Reverend Patricia Standifur officiating. The family will accept friends beginning at 12:00 noon.
