James Lilly Obituary

James E. Lilly, 76, of Jonben passed away peacefully after a long illness Tuesday, January 9th, surrounded by family at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley. He was born August 23, 1947, to Eulis "Happy Jack" and Audrey (Sears) Lilly.


James was a 1965 graduate of Stoco High School. He was a Vietnam veteran, serving in the 9th Infantry Division, in which he was awarded four Bronze Stars.


He returned to Raleigh County, working in the coal industry before retiring. He was a meticulous and talented jack-of-all-trades.


James loved cooking, woodworking, traveling, especially to the beach for his favorite, seafood, muscle cars, watching WVU sports, and music. He loved to gather with his children and grandchildren for the holidays. Being "Papaw James" was his favorite role.


James was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ernie and Danny, and baby sister Michelle.


James leaves behind his wife of 17 years, Sheri (Edwards), daughters Angela (Antonio) Martinez, Kristi (Jarrod) Birchfield, and Rebekah (Kirby) Kirschmann. Sons John, Michael, and Matthew (Jackie) Ruediger. Grandchildren Austin Tyler, Savannah, Kendall, Ethan, Olivia, Barret, Blaxen, Saelah, Mylah, and a grandson due in February. Sisters Gloria, Carol, Sharon, Priscilla, and Juanita, brothers Dean, Kirk, and Kenneth, and many nieces and nephews.


In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV.
