It is with great sadness to announce that our beloved Janice "Janet" Marie Nelson Holmes of Beckley, WV passed away in her home on Wednesday, April 29, 2020. Born on January 22, 1935 at Montcoal, WV, she was the daughter of the late Ira Murl Nelson and Alma Rittie Combs Nelson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Holmes, son Billy Ray Holmes; grandsons Micheal Pyatt and Thomas Pyatt, and granddaughter Theresa Tharpe; brothers Kenneth Nelson and Danny Nelson; sisters Ethel Lovell and Carol Miller.
Janet was an exceptional mother and grandmother. She found beauty in the simplest things. Her passions entailed reading classic literature, memorizing bible versus, and being surrounded by nature. Janet was fond of animals. Her favorite music was the song of a bird and wind chimes in the breeze. Janet was an advocate of hard work and being outdoors in the sunshine. Next to the Lord, Janet had unbreakable love for her family and would do anything for each of them. It gives the family much comfort to know that Janet was a saved Christian and is now resting in the arms of Jesus Christ. In Heaven, she is now reunited with loved ones and a special little dog named Lacy.
Left to cherish her memories are her children Richard Holmes and wife Peggy, Wanda Nelson and husband Roger, Sandra Campbell, and Rita Turner and husband Dorsel; sisters Erma Cook, Helen Richmond, Ann Shelton, and Brenda Shelton; brothers Norman Nelson and Roger Nelson; grandchildren Wayne Honaker, Kenny Honaker, Kelli Spencer, Elizabeth Massey, William Turner, Casey Mayes, Tanya Harmon; fifteen great-grandchildren, eight great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
To honor Janet's wishes, a small graveside service will be held at the Massey Branch Cemetery at Arnett, WV on Saturday, May 2, at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be sent to Janet's favorite charity organization, St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
Lastly, the family would like to thank Janet's grandson's wife, Elizabeth Deal Turner, for all of the love and hard work during the hours of sickness, a special nurse at CAMC named Bobbi who went above and beyond for the family, and Hospice of Southern West Virginia team for their kindness, support, and guidance.
