John Louis Porterfield

John Louis Porterfield, 21, of Maple Fork, passed away on January 8, 2021. He was the son of Cheryl Phillips Porterfield of Maple Fork and Steven G. Porterfield of Shady Spring.

John was a 2017 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High school. Along with playing guitar, he enjoyed writing songs and getting together with friends to play their music. He was loving, caring, and witty, and loved playing pranks and making people laugh. He also loved learning about history, playing video games, and guns. John will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.

He is preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Marie Phillips, whom he loved dearly; maternal great grandfather, Louis Petosa; paternal great grandmother, Sarah O’Neal; paternal great grandfather, Donald O’Neal; and paternal great aunt, Mary Lou Merrylees.

Those left to cherish John’s memory include his mother, Cheryl Phillips Porterfield (George) of Maple Fork; father, Steven G. Porterfield (Dee Dee) of Shady Spring; maternal grandfather and best friend, Joseph D. Phillips, Sr. of Maple Fork; paternal grandmother, Donna O‘Neal of Beckley; paternal grandfather, Steven L. Porterfield; brother, Steven James Porterfield, whom he always looked up to, of Rockford, Illinois; aunts, Dawn Marcus of Maple Fork, Tracy Tucker (Bill) of Maple Fork, and Laura Korcsmaros (Mike) of South Carolina; uncle, Joseph D. Phillips, Jr. (Lesley) of Maple Fork; cousins, Amber Baber (Casey) of Beckley, Sydney Phillips of Maple Fork, Courtney Deguire (Drough) of New York, Tess Terry (Shaun) of Maple Fork, Amanda Korcsmaros (Justin) of Beckley, Lori Muss (Chris) of New York, Christopher Muss of Richmond, VA, Michael Muss of New York, Adam Tucker (Jess) and family of Shady Spring, Savanna Tucker of Shady Spring, and Grace Johnson of Shady Spring; extended family member, Lois King of Maple Fork; and best friends, Michael Redman of Beckley and Bradley Smith (Alley) of Beckley; along with a host of other family and friends.

We have comfort in knowing that John is now in heaven in the arms of his “Mama Lee.”

Services will be held at Melton Mortuary on Friday, January 15. Visitation will begin at 12PM, with a memorial to follow. Please wear your mask and follow all government regulations regarding COVID-19. Interment will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens following the service.

Pallbearers will be Michael Redman, Bradley Smith, Steven J. Porterfield, Shaun Terry, Casey Baber, and Bill Tucker. Joe Phillips, Jr. and Gavin Hunt will be honorary pallbearers.
