Marilyn Kay (Walker) Mitchem was born on June 3, 1950 in Stanaford, WV. She was the daughter of the late Earl A. Walker of Stanaford and the last survivor of her immediate family. Marilyn gained her Heavenly wings on September 30, 2021 at Bowers Hospice House at the age of 71.
Along with her father, Marilyn is preceded in death by her son Michael R. Mitchem; brothers Earl Walker Jr. and Larry Walker; and her sisters Zelda Jones and Sheila Jo Gunnoe. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her loving husband of 51 years, Billy Ray Mitchem; daughters Melody Mitchem, Michelle Mitchem Lilly, and Melissa Knell and her husband Hank; grandchildren Jared Lilly, Kendall Lilly, Jake Knell, and Jaxson Mitchem; and many extended family and friends who loved and will miss her dearly.
Marilyn was a devoted and loving mother who took great pride in taking care of her family, especially her children. This was shown by her dedication to her children’s sports and extra-curricular activities.
She was a member of Crab Orchard Baptist Church for over 40 years. Marilyn was previously employed at United Bank (RCNB), Southern West Virginia Clinic, and Dr. Rahim’s Office in Beckley.
After retirement, she enjoyed volunteering her time with the Keenagers and other church activities. Marilyn loved spending time with her friends and family shopping, dining out, and traveling with the Abbott Bus Tours.
A Memorial Celebration will be held on Friday, October 8, 2021 beginning at 6 pm at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. The family will receive friends from 5 – 6 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the NOW Program at the Crab Orchard Baptist Church, 1501 Robert C Byrd Dr, Crab Orchard, WV 25827 in memory of Marilyn.
