Martha Jane Tolliver, 84, of Bolt, WV, passed away peacefully on the morning of August 9, 2023. Born February 22, 1939, Martha was the daughter of Frank and Pearl Stanley. She is preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband, Danny Tolliver.
Martha will be remembered for her generous spirit and her lively sense of humor. She was known for her cooking and for the love and care she gave her family, friends, and neighbors.
Martha is survived by her two sons and their families, including her son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Della Tolliver of Bolt, WV; her son and daughter-in-law, Jeffery Tolliver and Mary Bennett of Bolt, WV; her grandchildren and their families, Jason, Steffany, Kaeli and Saydee Tolliver of Lincolnton, NC; Charles, Jessica "Brandy," Ashlin, Dannilyn, and Walker Dunbar of Clear Creek, WV; Gregory and Cory Tolliver of Bloomington, IN; and Autumn Tolliver of Bolt, WV; her brother and sister-in-law, Samuel and Theresa Stanley of Bolt, WV; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Martha was an educator, home cook, gardener, and farmer. She could often be found consulting a Farmer's Almanac or planting calendar, cooking old family recipes and trying recipes from a new cookbook, or sitting in a rocking chair on the porch. She cared for many elementary and special needs children during her career with the Raleigh County Board of Education. The Tolliver family have many memories eating biscuits and gravy at grandma's, playing wiffle ball in the front yard, making reindeer food every Christmas, visits from the blanket fairy at sleepovers, camping together, and listening to grandma's stories about growing up in the mountains and on the farm. Martha taught her family to make many of their favorite recipes, including hankypanks, beef stew, New Year's punch, and Christmas cookies.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1p.m. on Monday, August 14, 2023, at Breckenridge Missionary Baptist Church followed by the funeral service at 1 p.m. Martha will be laid to rest at the Richmond family cemetery in Bolt, WV with her late husband Danny.
