Michael William Newsum, 29, of Glen Morgan, WV, passed away suddenly on August 26, 2023. He was born on February 19, 1994, in Duluth, Minnesota, to his loving parents Kenny & Shari (Vukelich) Newsum. Michael's courageous and resilient spirit touched the lives of many.
Michael was known for his quick wit and sense of humor, always bringing laughter to those around him. He was an inspiring and caring individual, who had a strong presence in the lives of his family and friends. His strength and uplifting nature will be deeply missed.
In addition to his parents, Michael is survived by his grandparents, Michael & Patricia Vukelich of Kure Beach, NC, his grandmother Edith Bradley of Wrenshall, MN, brother Erik Newsum, sister Lindsey Newsum (Matthew Giorgetti), niece Saige Newsum (all of Statesville, NC), and numerous special aunts, uncles, cousins, and loved ones. He was preceded in death by his grandfather Julius Newsum, aunts Debbie Christian and Julie Newsum, uncle Rahsaan Greenwood, and step-grandfather George Bradley.
Michael graduated from Shady Spring High School in 2012 and went on to attend New River Community & Technical College mechanic's program. He was employed as shop maintenance at Aspen Corporation.
Michael was baptized at First Lutheran Church in Ely, MN. He found solace in exploring spirituality and enjoyed his newly found sobriety, as well as the support he received from his loved ones in the recovery community.
Michael enjoyed fishing at the pier in Kure Beach, with his grandfather, playing video games, and embracing his other hobbies. He took immense pride in his sobriety, valued his time spent in recovery and was committed to supporting others on their journey.
A celebration of Michael's life will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at New Life Independent Baptist Church 935 Hinton Road White Oak, WV 25989 at 2:00PM. The family will receive friends and family two hours prior.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Michael's honor and loving memory to the recovery charity of your choice.
