Nina “Irene” Cook, our beloved mother finally laid down the old rugged cross and exchanged it for her crown. She is now in the loving arms of her Lord and Savior. On this day, June 1st, 2002, she lost her son Lawrence “Larry” Cook to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy to only be reunited with him exactly 20 years later.
Irene was born in Cranberry, WV to the late Lonnie and Nina Adkins. She joined in marriage to Jimmy Dennis Cook with whom they had their oldest and only son, Larry Cook and 2 daughters, Karen and Lynette. Jimmy preceded her in death in October 2000 and Larry joined his father in June 2001. She continued this journey without them and helping her daughter raise her 2 grandchildren, Seth and Sarah Thompson, with whom they made their home.
Irene loved God, her family, and her 2 grandchildren Seth and Sarah.
She is survived by her daughters Karen (Billy) Waddell, Jr. and Lynette Thompson and her partner Mike Adkins; her pride and joy, her beautiful grandchildren Seth and his wife Makenzie and Sarah Thompson; great-grandchildren Parker and Landrey Thompson; step-grandson Chris (Tanya) Waddell; step-great-grandchildren James Harper, Ethan Waddell, Lucas Waddell, and Isabella Waddell; sister Jewel Rawls; brothers Reuben (Mary) and Floyd Adkins; and many nieces and nephews who will cherish her memory.
Irene is preceded in death by her loving husband of 41 years, Jimmy Dennis Cook; son Lawrence “Larry” Walton Cook; brothers Curtis, Jack, and Virgil Adkins; sisters Mary Sue Obugene, Nila Bledsoe, Drema Bragg, and Elizabeth Navarro, and many extended family.
Irene was a Christian of the Baptist faith and whole heartedly loved the Lord. She was a kind and humble soul and known to her whole family as Mawmaw. Her greatest loves in our world was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
