On Thursday, November 19th, 2020, Norma Creger Lewis passed away the age of 98.
One of three children, Norma Creger was born on October 19th, 1922. Her parents were Elmer Norton and Lovenia Almeda Blair Creger. Her sister, Martha Gunter and brother, James Creger have preceded her in death as well.
A longtime resident of Shady Spring, Norma was married to Cecil Carrington Lewis. To their union was born two sons, Cecil Carrington Jr., born on March 8th, 1945 and David Norton Lewis born on May 15th, 1949. Active in the First United Methodist Church of Beckley, in later years, Norma and Carrington enjoyed being members of the Perry Memorial United Methodist Church.
After a long and good marriage, Carrington Lewis died on August 11th, 2005, at the age of 87. Norma Lewis will always be remembered for her positive and outgoing personality. She was faced with many trials and yet always seemed to look on the sunny side of life. She endured not only the passing of Carrington but that of both her sons, Cecil Carrington Jr. died at the age of 19, while attending Marshall University. David died on March 4th, 2019. A grandson, David Norton Lewis Jr., died in infancy.
Norma worked for the West Virginia Department of Human Services as a social service worker, social coordinator and volunteer coordinator. One of her greatest labors of love was Hospice of Southern West Virginia that she helped organize some 20 years after the death of her son, Carrington Jr., from cancer.
Norma was a charter member of the Shady Spring District Women’s club, being the first president.
She leaves to cherish her memory her faithful daughter-in-law, Connie Elmore Lewis; several nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, E. Burton Gunter; and many friends and admirers. Connie has often said, “No one could have welcomed me into their family any kinder than Norma and Carrington. At the end of the day, that says it all about the life of Norma Lewis. So after a long and good life, Norma goes to join all those who have gone on before her. “Oh Glad Reunion,” may she forever rest in peace..
Graveside services will be Tuesday, November 24th at 11:00 am in the Sunset Memorial Park. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery. Words of comfort may be offered to the family at www.meltonmortuary.com Melton Mortuary and Cremation Center have the honor of serving the family.
