Pauline Angeline (Redestine) Meadows Obituary

Pauline Redestine Meadows, October 4, 1926 to January 26, 2025
Pauline was born in Logan County to Charlie and Sadie Ray Redestine. Her childhood years were spent at Riley Camp, near Amherstdale, West Virginia. Pauline and her younger brother Joe lost their mother to typhoid fever, and were orphaned a few years later when their father was hit by a car and killed. After several months with their aunts, feeling unwanted and not properly cared for, Pauline and Joe were placed at the Mountain Mission School in Grundy, Virginia. There she spent her teenage years, and met two very important people in her life.
Ruthe Brown, now Hall, came to MMS and she and Pauline came to be such close friends that they began to call each other sister. That relationship continued all her life; all Pauline's family referred to Ruthe as Aunt Ruthe, and vice versa.
Also while at MMS, Pauline's cousin, Monroe West, suggested that she write to a fellow soldier (this was now during World War II), Charles Meadows of Raleigh County. What started as a sort of pen pal relationship developed into a long-distance romance over the course of the war. When the war was over and Charles was discharged, he made his way to Grundy to meet this girl he had known only through her letters. On his first visit he proposed, and they were married on February 9, 1946.
Pauline, or Polly, lived most of her adult life in Lester as the wife of a coal miner and later poultry farmer (truly a family undertaking) and helped with mail delivery on a contract route through Maple Meadow. They raised two daughters and were foster parents to four sisters for several years. In retirement they left the farm in Lester and moved to Old Eccles Road near Beckley. After Charles passed in 2008, Polly decided to "break up housekeeping" and spent her final years with her daughters.
Polly is survived by her two daughters, Patti Lee (Terry) Worley of Louisville, KY, and Betty Jo (Ronald) Goodwin, of Lake Royale, NC. Five grandchildren: Wayne (Maria) Worley of Duvall, WA, Ron (Rose) Goodwin of Beckley, Charles "Chuck" (Michelle) Worley of Louisville, KY, Amy (Jeff) Job of Lake Royale, and Terri (Andrew) Hamilton of Allen, TX.
Eight great grandchildren: Michael (Mattie) Worley of Monroe, WA, Kendra Job of Orlando, FL, Adam (Johanna) Worley of Marysville, WA, Chris Goodwin of Beckley, Jeffrey Job of Lake Royale, James Hamilton of Allen, Nathaniel "Nate" Worley of Louisville, and Creda Hamilton of Allen.
Two great great grandchildren: Lexington Henry Worley and Percival Davies Worley, both of Monroe, WA.
She is also survived by her sister Ruthe of Fredericksburg, VA, a special niece, Joyce Redestine Permelia of Maiden, NC, a nephew, Roy Street of Sherman, TX, great nephews Larry Hushour and Darren Hushour of Mount Airy, MD, great nieces Carrie Taylor of Grand Prairie, TX and Stacy Hicinbothem of The Colony, TX and her dear friend, Carol Aurednic of Beckley.
Polly was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Joe Redestine, her brother Noah Street, niece Kay Hushour, nephew Larry Street, and her husband of 62 years, Charles Meadows.

A special thank you to the nurses and staff of Baptist Health East, and those of Hosparus, both in Louisville, who cared for her so well in her final days.
