Peter Pendelton Hypes Obituary

Peter Pendelton Hypes Sr, better known as "Daddy" and "Papaw" went to be with the Lord on March 14th, 2025.

Mr. Hypes was a wonderful man full of wisdom, love, and stories. Pete served his country in the United States Army and was discharged honorably. After discharge, Pete began working for the Virginian Railway In the 1950s , Pete would then go on to working for Norfolk Southern where he retired as a yard master after 60 years and 2 days. It was rare if you ran into Pete, and you didn't get at least 1 or 2 stories of his railroad days. Pete's influence on the railroad began with his early working years for the Virginian Railway and ended with Pete being featured in Train Magazine in 2016, a station board named after him, and being prestigiously featured at the Princeton Railroad Museum.

While Pete loved his career on the railroad, he absolutely loved his family more. After retiring if Pete wasn't taking care of things around the house, he was sitting in the stands of all of his grandchildren's football and softball games cheering them on. He would often brag about all 17 grandchildren......Yes all 17 of them.

In addition to his parents Annie Evelyn Hypes and Buford Easley Hypes and siblings Sam and Nelva Webster Buford Hypes, Henry and Maude Canterbury, and Betty Jo Hypes 2018, Pete was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rachel Marie Hypes, his daughter, Bertia Elaine Hypes 2019, and granddaughter, Neveah Hypes.

Left behind to cherish his memories are his sister Alice Hypes of Mullens, WV, his oldest son Peter Hypes Jr. and wife Maranda and children Karlee, Tre, Tegan, and Kenzlie of Cyclone WV, his youngest daughter Elizabeth Hypes and Husband Jeff Kimrey and children Priscilla Raines, Michael King II, and Makayla King of Beckley, WV, his youngest son Derrick Hypes and friend Nancy Lilly, and children Andrea Hypes, Derrick Hypes Jr, and Alli Jo Hypes, his granddaughters Marissa Arellanos and Rachel Arellanos of Hotchikiss, WV, and Evangeline Tiede of Spartanburg, SC, and his great grandchildren Jesom Culver & Paisley Sumpter of Spartanburg, SC, and Annie Nettles of Beckley, WV, and his niece Trudy Blackwell and niece Tammy McKinney.
