Phoebe (Bledsoe) Tieche-Herring

Phoebe Anne Bledsoe Tieche-Herring, 97, of Beckley, passed away Thursday, October 10th 2019 at the Villages at Greystone, with her daughter and adored toy poodle Sampson by her side.
She was born in Beckley on April 17, 1922, the younger daughter of S. Monroe and Wanda Knopp Campbell Bledsoe.
On October 15, 1950, she married Albert McCulloch Tieche, who predeceased her. In November 1998 she married Henry H. Herring, who also predeceased her. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Margaret (Bocky) Wilson Bledsoe Stafford and her youngest son, Albert David Bledsoe Tieche.
She is survived by: daughter Nancy Monroe Tieche of Beckley; son, Albert McCulloch Tieche Jr. and wife, Melinda, of Beckley; son, Albert Updyke Tieche II and wife Jennifer of Madison, TN; grandchildren, Taylor Elizabeth Tieche of Nashville, TN and Samuel Weston Tieche of Charleston, SC; and niece Margaret (Margo) Campbell Stafford of Clarksburg, WV.
She graduated from Beckley's Woodrow Wilson High School and Greenbrier Jr. Women's College in Lewisburg and earned her bachelor's degree from West Virginia University.
During World War II she enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserves' WAVES, or Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service. She was assigned to the Japanese Unit of the Navy's top secret code breaking operation at the Naval Communications Annex in Washington, D.C. The nature of her work was highly classified and she refused to reveal it to even her family for decades, in keeping with her training. She later taught music and English in Raleigh County Schools.
She was a lifelong member of Beckley Presbyterian Church where she served on various committees and hosted the church's annual Ice Cream Social for many years. She was a member of Black Knight Country Club in Beckley and El Conquistador Country Club in Bradenton, Florida where she had a second home.
She was a member of the Captain James Allen Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, founded by her mother, and her aunts.
She was active in different area organizations over the years including the Phymosa Garden Club. She was one of the first volunteers for Hospice of Southern West Virginia, Inc. and was involved with early HIV/Aids programs in the southern part of the state. She was also the first woman to serve on the board of the Beckley Area Foundation.
She enjoyed playing golf and tennis, doing needlepoint, and following the WVU football and basketball teams. For many years she showed horses with members of her family. She played violin and piano, loved traveling, entertaining, broadway shows, antiquing, music and dancing, and was an avid reader and solver of crossword puzzles. She was a woman of wit, style, grace, and many talents.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to caregivers Jackie Williams, Misty Thomas, and Nadine Stover, with heartfelt thanks to Norma Stover for her years of friendship and care.
Arrangements are being handled by Melton Mortuary. A memorial celebration will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in her memory to Beckley Area Foundation or Hospice of Southern West Virginia.
