Robert Johnson Showalter, 71, passed from this life on the afternoon of June 8, 2023. He was born in Meltalton, WV to Bill and Mabel Terry Showalter on the coldest day in November 16th, 1951. Two infant brothers precedes him in death as well as an older brother, James and his older sister, Becky. Remaining family members include his brothers Kenneth and Gary; sister Kathy; two sons; and three grandchildren.
Robert learned the value of working for and with others at an early age. Everyday he carried water and such for older relatives. His mother taught him the chores of running the house-cooking for a large family, bringing in firewood and coal, cleaning, gardening and running to the store. He carried this ethic into later life by volunteering at "Helping Hands" and "Carpenter's Corner" and feeding anyone he saw in need or giving shelter for a night in his home.
In his "teen" years, he and his brothers enjoyed being lifeguards at Lake Stephens. At Trap Hill High School he participated in every sport-football and basketball were his favorites-even though he was injured in football. Robert continued to play basketball in neighborhood games throughout his life.
Robert had a variety of work experiences-mining, construction at R. D. Bailey Lake, cooking at several restaurants, being a trusted key person in a Las Vegas casino, part of a crew on a cruise ship and as a teamster in New York. He is most known as a brick layer/mason in Beckley and other parts of the state and others. Rob was an avid reader and did a lot of writing. He knew a lot of people from sports and work. Rob will be dearly missed.
A gathering to celebrate his life will be held at Lake Stephens at a later date. Everyone is welcome come and share a memory. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Melton Mortuary to help defray funeral expenses. Words of comfort and condolences may be offered to the family by visiting www.meltonmortuary.com
