Sharon Matherly Obituary
Sharon Matherly passed Sunday, June 28th, 2026, surrounded by loving family. She was born on May 1, 1947, in Beckley, WV.
Sharon graduated from Concord College in 1980 with a bachelor's degree in Education. She was a reading specialist at Piney View Elementary and also served as a substitute teacher for the Raleigh County Board of Education.
Sharon loved reading and was an avid gardener. She loved to crochet and to bake. Sharon often used her hobbies to care for her family, whether through a handmade afghan or special cake requests. She showed her love in meaningful ways. Sharon loved animals of all kinds. She spent time rescuing animals as well as donating to philanthropic animal care centers such as the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee and many others.
Sharon was preceded in death by her husband, John Matherly; her parents, Homer and Bessie Warden; brothers, Homer Warden and Henry Peraldo; and sister, Martha Hicks. Sharon is survived by her daughter, Nina Gipson (Becca), and grandson, Raiden; her son, John M. Matherly; and her son, Brad Matherly (Becca), and grandson, Malachi.
She is also survived by her sister in law Janet Warden, and nephews Alan (Judy) Warden and family, and Robbie Warden, along with many other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Becca Hart and the Hospice of Southern West Virginia for the kindness shown to Sharon while she was in their care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Hospice of Southern West Virginia or the Elephant Sanctuary of Tennessee in Sharon's memory.
A graveside service will take place for Sharon on Thursday July 16th, 2026 at 12:00 noon at Sunset Memorial Park. To offer words of comfort or a condolence please visit her tribute page. Arrangements have been entrusted to Melton Mortuary and Cremation Center.
