William Duaird Thompson Obituary

William "Sonny" Duaird Thompson, 92, of Beckley, West Virginia, passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2025 from a sudden illness at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, West Virginia.

Born December 14, 1932 in Longacre, he was the son of the late William Duaird and Leoda Thompson. He married the love of his life, Shelvia Jean on April 2, 1953 in Falls View, West Virginia.

Sonny, also known as Gunny, enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 18 and served his country in the Korean War. During his service in the Korean War, he was a two time combat wounded veteran and was honored with the Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice. After his military service, he served as a West Virginia State Police Officer for 32 and a half years. Upon retiring as a Captain, he continued his service to the public as a United States Marshall at the federal courthouse in Beckley, West Virginia for 10 years.

He was a member of the Calvary Assembly of God.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Leoda Thompson; sister, Betty Rhodes; and daughter, Janette Evelyn Porter.

Those left to cherish his memory include his devoted wife of 72 years, Shelvia Jean Jarrett Thompson of Beckley, WV; son, Jeff (Linda) Thompson of Charleston, WV; brother-in-law, Tommy Jarrett of Cleveland, OH; son-in-law, Chris Porter of Georgia; grandsons, Justin (Andrea) of Charleston, WV and Garrett of Charlotte, NC; granddaughter, Allison of Charlotte, NC; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

The Funeral Services will be held on Monday, April 28th at the Calvary Assembly of God with Pastor John Jordan officiating. The family will begin receiving visitors at 11:00 am and the Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 pm. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Retired State Police Officer Bob McComas and members of the West Virginia State Police will serve as pallbearers.
