Even when your path takes me through the valley of deepest darkness, fear will never conquer me, for you already have. Your authority is my strength and my peace. The comfort of your love takes away my fear. I’ll never be lonely, for you are near.
Garrell Eugene (Gary) Thomas, Jr. passed away peacefully surrounded by friends and family on April 11, 2022 at his home in Prosperity, WV.
Gary was born on January 18th, 1947 to the late Billie Mae Lyttle and Garrell Thomas, Sr. Besides his parents, those that went to eternal life before him include a brother, Steven Bruce; a stepfather, JJ Coleman; and his son-in-law, Michael Deeds.
Gary leaves behind his loving wife of 51 years, Judy Thomas; His children and their families, Steven Thomas (Andrea), and Jacob; Heather Redden (Jeremy), and Alexis Deeds and Taylor; and Amanda Blackburn (Mike) and Michael. Gary was the oldest of his siblings and was a father figure to them growing up. He will be missed by his brothers Mike, Rick, and Jeff Thomas, and by his only sister Linda Lamm (Terry).
Gary was a Navy veteran and served aboard the USS Hancock during the Vietnam War. It was after he got out that he met the love of his life Judy and married her after 6 months of dating. He gave his life to the Lord in the 1970’s while on the phone with a pastor in Charleston and then devoted much of his life to leading the younger generation to Christ.
He was the youth group leader at Word of Faith Assembly for over 30 years and made a positive impact in countless lives as a result.
He worked for the phone company for 30 years. After retirement he took a job as a school bus driver for Raleigh County, and then finally as a Greeter at Wal-Mart.
Gary faced Alzheimer’s Disease with a bravery like no other and never once complained to his family. His faith in God only grew, and his favorite scripture to quote was from 1 Corinthians 2:16- For who hath known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
He loved God, his family, making his famous banana pancakes and fudge, the WVU Mountaineers, the San Diego Padres, classic cars, Roy Orbison, and hiking at Little Beaver and Grandview. He was one of a kind and irreplaceable, and surely Heaven shouted with joy to see him arrive at last.
